The “First Great Convention” of the UNIA

25,000 people attended the “First Great Convention” of the UNIA. Whereas the Pan-African Congress calls for a partnered approach to improving the state of Africans across the globe, the UNIA takes the stance that given Europeans’ and Americans’ longstanding and ongoing exploitation of African lands and peoples, those parties cannot be trusted. Garvey’s rallying cry of “Africa for the Africans!” calls for mass migration back to African countries and support of Black-owned enterprise in the meantime. The convention was held at Madison Square Garden.
