“Shuffle Along” opens in late May and runs for 484 performances through July 15, 1922. The show featured young Josephine Baker and Florence Mills. Frustrated by the inequities of performing as a Black woman to mostly all-White venues in the US, Josephine Baker moved to Paris in 1925. She became such a phenomenal success there that she only returns to perform in the US on condition that she does so before an integrated audience. This recording was made after she made the leap across the Atlantic.
