“The Little Colonel” opens at Victoria Theater

“The Little Colonel” opens at Loew’s Victoria Theater and nationwide. Set just after the American Civil War in the south, it stars Lionel Barrymore as a retired Confederate colonel, Shirley Temple as his chipper, precocious grand daughter, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson as a tap dancing butler and Hattie McDaniel as a boisterous maid. This is less than one month before the Harlem riots that effectively bring the movement to an end. in 1940, McDaniel will go on to be the first Black woman to win an Oscar for playing yet another plantation maid.
